Journal of Functional FoodsVolume 25, August 2016, Pages 38–49Excessive amounts of free radicals are deleterious for cells, resulting in cell damage, affecting the wound healing process and causing premature ageing or even neoplastic transformation. Here the capacity of Manuka honey (MH) to protect against oxidative damage and improve the process of skin wound healing was investigated.Up to 16 compounds were identified in MH, with leptosin derivatives and methyl syringate as the major ones. MH protected against apoptosis, intracellular ROS production, and lipid and protein oxidative damage. MH..
The Laryngoscope, 2011Low pH, hydrogen peroxide generation, and the hyperosmolarity mechanisms of antimicrobial action are ubiquitous for all honeys. In addition, manuka honey has been shown to contain high concentrations of methylglyoxal (MGO), contributing the relatively superior antimicrobial activity of manuka honey compared to non-MGO honeys. In high concentrations, manuka honey is effective in killing Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in vitro. Lower concentrations of honey, however, are desirable for clinical use as a topical rinse in chronic rhinosinusitis in order to maximize the tolerab..
Al Ain: A team of UAE University researchers has made a breakthrough in the treatment of cancer by discovering the exciting properties of manuka honey that effectively inhibit the growth of a variety of cancer cell types including breast, skin, and colon cancer. The honey is obtained from nectar collected by honey bees from manuka trees found in New Zealand. Recognised for its anti-bacterial and wound healing properties for many years, the honey was, however, not investigated for its potential effects on cancer cells, said a UAE University official.“The ground-breaking discovery provides strong..
Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy7 September 2011Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of wound infection throughout the world and the prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains demands innovative interventions. Honey is an ancient wound remedy that has been reintroduced into modern medicine for the topical treatment of wounds, and licensed products containing medical-grade honey are available in Australasia, Europe and North America. Honey has a complex chemistry, and its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity varies with floral source, climate and h..
The potential medical benefits of Manuka honey have been in the news today, with several newspapers reporting on honey’s ability to inhibit various types of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant “superbugs”, such as MRSA.Honey has long been known to have antibacterial properties and is sometimes included in licensed wound-care products. However, researchers discussing its use at a scientific conference have said it is not widely used because the way it works is not understood. They have presented research that demonstrates how manuka honey can stop bacteria from attaching to tissue at the m..
The Cochrane Database of Systematic ReviewsFirst published: 6 March 2015There is high quality evidence from two trials that honey dressings heal partial thickness burns more quickly than conventional dressings by around five days however practitioners must consider whether the comparator dressings in these trials are clinically meaningful to them. In one of the two trials the control dressing was a polyurethane film dressing whilst in the other the control group received a range of interventions (polyurethane film, paraffin gauze, sterile linen, framyecetin-impregnated tulle, left exposed). It..
University of YorkCentre for Reviews and DisseminationThe authors concluded that available evidence indicated a greater efficacy of honey compared with alternative dressing treatments for superficial or partial thickness burns. The authors' conclusions reflected the evidence presented, but it should be borne in mind that most studies were conducted in one institution, most studies had small sample sizes and there were weaknesses in the review process.Click here to read more.....
Associated PressDecember 27th 2007It was revealed that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had quietly approved a line of honey-based wound dressings during the fall of that year. Derma Sciences, Inc., a New Jersey manufacturer of medical wound and skin care supplies, was then able to market their MEDIHONEY product. MEDIHONEY is a line of wound dressings consisting chiefly of an absorbent alginate (which is a component of brown algae) pad, covered in Manuka (Leptospermum) honey.Click here to read more.....
Publisher: NHS ChoicesPublication date: 14 April 2011NHS Choices has conducted an assessment of press reports about the ability of manuka honey to inhibit various types of bacteria, including MRSA. The new research involved laboratory studies examining the effects of manuka honey on the molecular structure of three bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA-15), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A streptococci). The studies found that manuka honey affected the structure and activity of these bacteria. One of the studies also indicated that combining honey wi..
Preventing contamination of cane sugar in your honey is the key to providing a top grade product for market. Sugar (cane sugar) feeding bees is still recognised as a good way to ensure brood stock survival through colder winter months, or stimulating brood growth in spring. Sugar can also entice bees to stay around particular unifloral varieties for pollination. However, if this cane sugar is transferred from brood boxes or stored in top boxes during the collection phase, then it can “contaminate” and affect the purity of the honey. Other undesirable practises such as honey collection from bro..
Contemporary Clinical Dentistry1 October 2010The mean plaque scores for Groups I, II and III were 1.37, 1.35 and 1.57, respectively. The ANOVA revealed that between-group comparison was significant, with an F-value of 5.99 and a probability value of 0.004. The T-test was carried out to evaluate the inter-group significance, which revealed that the plaque inhibition by Manuka honey was similar to that of chlorhexidine mouthwash. Both Manuka honey and chlorhexidine mouthwash reduced plaque formation significantly, better than the xylitol chewing gum.Click here to read more.....
